Plants and flowers are what Studio Goun works on most often. From flowers with a clear shape — roses, lilies, plum blossom — through to the run of leaves and stems, the strength of this subject is how naturally it follows the curve of the body.

• Flowers fit a body well. They are made of curves rather than straight lines, so they follow the turn of an arm or a back.

• So the design is not finished on paper; it is placed on the body and adjusted while the flow is checked.

• The rose on the back of the hand, flowers across the back, the lily frame, plum blossom over old lettering, the snake and tulip — much of the studio's work sits here.

• There are two ways to take it: fine line, holding only the outline, or black and grey, carrying the thickness of each petal.

• Which one suits depends on size and placement. Smaller means fewer lines; larger opens room for shading.

• It is also a good subject for partial colour. Put colour on a single petal and the rest steps back like a background.

• Flowers are often used for cover-ups too, because leaves and stems can dissolve an existing edge naturally.

• Whether a cover-up will work depends on the condition of what is underneath. Send a photograph first and we will tell you.

• Each flower carries its own meaning, but the question asked first is simply why it has to be that flower.
