What is your style?

Geometric work builds a form out of lines and shapes. Symmetry and spacing are fully exposed, so precision matters more here than in freer drawing. At Studio Goun it most often appears as a frame or as part of a composition.

• A straight line or a circle shows every small error, so more time goes into the design stage.

• A body is not a flat surface. On a curve — an arm, a calf — the shape you see is not the shape drawn on paper.

• So the stencil is placed on the body and the angle settled before any needle is picked up.

• It suits compositions that set a plant or a symbol inside a shape, like the lily frame, where the line holds the drawing together.

• Subjects with clear symmetry, such as a set of scales, sit well in this style too.

• The finer the line, the more it can spread over time. Line weight is chosen with longevity in mind.

• Joints and fingers move a great deal and straight lines suffer there, which is raised when placement is decided.

• You can start small and add elements later; the whole piece does not have to be fixed on day one.

• If you do intend to extend it later, say so when the first placement is chosen.

• Worked in a private studio in Hongdae, strictly by appointment. Design, placement and size are settled together.
